Well, I have done it!!! Cant rely on the NHS, thats for sure, like melly said, they say to you if you need to come back before your appt just call us and we will fit you in. Total rubbish!! call us and we will ignore you!! I am going on Friday at 2 o clock so will finally get someone sensible, and then some peace of mind, knowing I will be listened to, and not told to "wait and see" Its a big step to take, I have been going to Guys for everything I was even born there myself, and alll 4 of my children were born there. But this saga has definitely put me off, I would like to try and get onto one of these doctor's NHS lists if possible, most of them seem to have thier NHS bases in St. Thomas, or Homerton, which is not too far. Will let everyone know how it all goes. Thanks for all the support x BARBARA

oops- just seen your other thread with the cost. Hope it's worth it!! Actually- considering I pay quite a bit for just a check up at the dentist, it's not too bad!

Hope it goes well for you - I had to go privately years ago,(pre-RA) days over a damaged Achilles tendon which had me crippled. It was worth every penny, as I was soon able to transfer to his NHS list for two lots of surgery. Kathleen x

Well done, it is a shame that you've had to do this but it seems the most sensible decision.
Will say a BIG prayer and hope you get the treatment you so rightly deserve.
Much love,
Amanda

Well done you. I am glad you have decided to go down this route.
When I was first diagnosed with RA last March I saw a Consultant privately and he was brilliant in getting my treatment started. My health has deteriorated quite dramatically over the last few months and he referred me onto the NHS as he thinks I need anti-tnf's. I saw a Consultant on the NHS and then she went off sick. As my health was continuing to deteriorate I went back to see my original Consultant privately whilst I waited for a new NHS Consultant to take over my case. It has been worth every penny and he does not mind me chopping and changing between the NHS and private. The other good thing about private is that he sent me a copy of a letter he wrote to my GP after every appointment explaining about my health and his suggestions. I was then able to pass this on to my NHS Consultant. I think the best thing about being able to go private (if you can afford it) is that if you find yourself unwell, you can usually get an appointment rapidly privately and your subsequent appointments in my experience are not charged as much as your initial consultation.
Hopefully you will only need to see your Consultant the once privately, and he will be able to get you sorted.
Keeping my fingers crossed for you on Friday.
Jackie xx

This is a sad reflection on our NHS but necessary for you Barbara. I hope that the help, advice and support that you need will be made open to you for free after this appointment. The very best of luck.

Hi Barbara,
I'm so sorry that you have had to go private to get help and hope that you see an improvement soon in your RA, or at least are able to get a good opinion on how to proceed with treatment.
I think it just goes to show how different the various Health Trust manage their patients' RA treatment. Fortunately for me the Trust I'm under have been very good and I'm now on Anti-TNF treatment and my care has been very good.
Wishing all the best and good luck on Friday,
Love,
Barbara XXXXX

Thank you everyone for your messages, its so good to have you all watching my back!!! Up to now I have still had no contact from the nurses at all, so its been over a week from my original call, and on Friday I called again, and the specialist nurse has still not returned that call!! I will definitely be getting onto PALS about this, its very disappointing, and makes you feel so worthless, that they cant even be bothered to call someone back who is in pain. Hopefully I can get referred to a different consultant on the NHS, and have a better relationship with the team. Will keep you updated. BARBARA

Hi Julie, yes, it was Roy's appt today. It was to look at his heart to see if he needed a different kind of pacemaker than the norm. He doesnt have one now, as part of the heart was damaged when he had 2 heart attacks, one in 1992 and one in 2005. This one would need to be done through a vein in his thigh, and would keep the working part from getting weaker. It kind of gives the heart mini shocks its called an ICD. After having tests from before Christmas they decided at the moment all is ok, so not got that to worry about at the moment. I am absolutely furious with the rheumy team at the clinic!! I dont need the stress of them ignoring my phone calls as well as the pain and swelling. I just hope the private consult can sort out some better meds, even if he has to write to my GP to get me the prescription for them. BARBARA
